NAME OF LESSON: Station Agent
OBJECTIVE: The student will practice interpreting and applying oral and written instructions in a consistent manner.
CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES: The teacher will explain to the class what the definition, characteristics and examples of duties of a Station Agent for BART are according to information provided by BART Human Resources Department. After a classroom discussion and questions are answered, the teacher will hand out an assignment sheet with this information included and ask the students to write an essay explaining each of these skills and how the student would prepare themselves for successfully working in this job. The teacher can give examples regarding how to provide information to passengers about: service, fares, routes, schedules, etc. Students can learn how to communicate important information to customers from sample literature. For example, the information booth at the local mall informs customers about the different stores, transit information, restrooms and answers to other pertinent questions. Each student will work independently and turn in the assignment at the end of the second class period.
CONDITIONS: This lesson should take two class periods and the assignment should be approximately one to two pages in length and written in essay form (i.e. sentences, paragraphs, etc.).
MATERIALS: The teacher will need to make up an assignment sheet with enough copies for each student and each student will need pencils and paper.
METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: The teacher will take note of the students asking questions and adding to the discussion. Also, the teacher will make sure all students are working in a quiet and independent manner while they are writing their essays. The teacher will make an assessment of each student's essay making sure the students followed the oral and written instructions correctly.
MODIFICATIONS/ACCOMMODATIONS: If there are students in the class with learning or other disabilities, the teacher or aide can assist these students individually. Also, the assessment can be modified accordingly. If possible, the students can type the final draft on a computer in the classroom or at home for extra credit.
STANDARDS ADDRESSED: The English/Language Arts Standards addressed include listening and writing as well as the auxiliary skills of following oral and written instructions and completing the assignment from beginning to end.
