Lesson Plan Two

Don Linstadt

Name of Lesson:  The Resistor Color Code and Reading a Multi-meter.

Objective:  Students will learn how to read the resistor color code and a meter.

Classroom Activities:  The teacher will provide a copy of the resistor color code, and also several numbered cards containing resistors.  The teacher will do several examples on the chalkboard and then ask the students to break into groups.  Each group must determine resistance, percentage tolerance, and wattage for all the resistors on each card.  Finally, each group measures battery voltage using a multi-meter.

Conditions:  This activity will take one period.  The students may work in groups of five or six.

Materials: The teacher provides six cards; each card contains ten resistors of various values.  Borrow four multi-meters from the science department, and ask the teacher how to use them.  (The multi-meters may be permanently damaged if they're used improperly, so monitor their use).  Provide students with several 1.5 or 9 volt batteries.

Methods of Assessment:  Student groups  will be assessed by the level of seriousness and overall accuracy.

Modifications/Accommodations:  The teacher or aide may assist any student with a physical or learning disability (e.g. color blindness) individually.

Standards Addressed:  The English/Language Arts Standards addressed include listening, observing and writing.
