PAC Meeting
Minutes
June 1

After introductions, Anita Madrid reviewed the list of committee agreements to date, Jamie King presented information requested by the group in slides and addressed some of the pros and cons of the preliminary recommendations and a thorough background on the populations shifts and decline throughout California.   A question and answer period followed. Jamie King will post new information on the district web site. The group requested the following information :

- Budget information germane to the redistricting process (V. Kilmartin will provide)

- The costs of portables (purchase and lease). Info provided by the Master Architect)

- The costs savings derived from school closures (itemized)-(V. Kilmartin will provide)

- Information on Test scores for vulnerable schools-( J. King will provide)

Vince Kilmartin offered to have Brian Richards speak to some of these issues at the next meeting.  The group decided to discuss some school consolidation together rather than in small teams. The discussion focused on Fairmount, Seaview, Olinda, Verde, and Valley View. Consolidations and temporary closures were discussed without finalizing recommendations.

The focus then shifted from school boundaries to the group process and a recommendation was made to make the committee’s preliminary, suggested recommendations public by putting all the information on the web. The pros and cons of this suggestion were offered without resolution.  The concern was how to channel parent input to the school delegates, how to minimize confusion and alarm over the issues, and how to bring persons up to speed on very complex information.  This discussion took up the balance of the evening and the one-half of the group agreed to extend the meeting closure time to 8:30 p.m.

Another suggestion was made to try to make sure that the delegates from all the schools attend the meetings especially those schools considered for possible consolidation. Everyone agreed that this was an important issue and that delegates should be urged to attend and provide input. Staff said they would work to try to get all parent delegates to the meetings. As 8:30 p.m. approached the group agreed to take up the recommendation to make more information (the deliberations) to the public during the first 10 minutes of the next meeting. Agreement was made to start the meeting at 6:10 p.m. allowing members to get their dinner and be seated.

The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted by Anita Madrid .
