Introduction
These assessment items are presently not mandated by the district. They were designed to be used in conjunction with classroom work, teacher observation, homework, & other on-going assessments, to help you mark the report cards.
Each grade level has two types of assessments: OPEN-ENDED MATHEMATICAL REASONING ASSESSMENTS & the SHORT ANSWER/MULTIPLE CHOICE ASSESSMENTS. Both types of assessments are organized by strands: Number Sense, Algebra & Functions, Measurement & Geometry, & Statistics, Data Analysis, & Probability. (Note – Mathematical Reasoning is embedded within each of the other four strands.) The major resources included Harcourt Math: Performance Assessment, Assessment Guide, & Benchmark Assessments. This is a work in progress.
In addition to assisting teachers in marking the report cards, these assessments are intended to be used as learning tools in the classroom. Used as on-going formative assessments, students have an opportunity to demonstrate their mathematical achievements & teachers can gain better knowledge about what their students know or do not know. For instance, prior to the Mathematical Reasoning assessments, students should see the 4 point rubric with its’ descriptors, so they know in advance what is expected of them. By looking at students’ explanations, teachers are provided with valuable information as to how they might modify a lesson or create appropriate work for groups of learners or individual students. In this way, there is constant feedback for the student as well as the teacher & a learning community is established.
