Portola Middle School is home to more than 640 diverse socio-economic and ethnic student population that reflects the communities in its feeder schools. While Portola has a substantial population of high socio-economic students that come from its surrounding neighborhoods of El Cerrito and Kensington, and Point Richmond, it also has a large population of socio-economically disadvantaged students from south Richmond.
Portola offers rigorous academic program that meets the needs of all students. Our standards based curriculum is geared toward helping every student achieve at or above grade level in all subjects. We have advanced courses for Gifted and Talented students. Students in need of additional support to strengthen their academic skills are enrolled in our intervention program. Our English Learners Department offers English Language Development classes and Specifically Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) instruction in core subjects to our English Learner students. For students with special needs, we offer special education programs (severely handicapped, non-severely handicapped, resource specialist, hearing impaired and speech) to support specific identified needs of each student. Our excellent elective program offers students opportunity to engage in exciting extra-curricular activities such as band, art, woodshop, computer, drama, leadership and dance.
Portola’s 2004-2005 API indicates that Portola is performing at above average in the district secondary school comparison. Our STAR test scores and attendance have been consistently improving the past five years. We are going to continue to provide the best possible educational program and support to our students to help them reach their potential.
