General Information About Interdistrict Permits
(Ed. Code 46600-4611)
Although students generally must attend school in the district where their parents/guardians reside, the district may, upon request, accept students from another district and may also allow students who live within the district to attend out-of-district schools. Interdistrict Permit applications may be approved for the following reasons:
- AB 287 (Allen) students may attend a school outside of their district of residence if one or both parents work in the district.
- When childcare needs of students in grades K-8 are met by a parent/guardian/relative or sitter not in the district of residence.
- To complete a school year when parents/guardians have moved out of the district during that year.
- When special mental or physical health needs of the student are certified by a physician, school psychologist or other appropriate school personnel.
- When the parent/guardian provides written evidence that the family will be moving to the receiving district in the immediate future and would like the student to start the year in that district.
- For students in grades 9-12 who have moved out of the district, to allow them to attend the same school until they graduate from that school. For students in grades K-8 who have moved out of the district, to allow them to attend the same school until they graduate from that school, but only if their presence improves the racial/ethnic balance of that school.
- When there is valid interest in a particular educational program not offered in the district of residency.
- Highly unusual personal circumstances.
The district may deny a transfer due to space limitations.
